they said on the call john boehner told the president to leave the tax cuts for the rich alone. the president says he doesn't want to do that. he's going to stick with his plan to raise $1.6 billion in revenue and if republicans have something better they should be specific now. eric cantor said republicans are already going further than they did in the same spot in 2010. >> we have done our part. we have put revenues on the table, something we didn't do two years ago during the debt ceiling negotiations. >> we've seen some positive developments in the last several weeks, in terms of what republicans have been saying about the need for revenue as part of a balanced package. the president will continue to make the case that that is essential. >> reporter: so both sides saying revenue is on the table, now the fight is obviously to figure out where it's going to come from, how the government is going to make more money. democrats want it to come from increased tax rates on the rich, republicans would prefer to make that extra money by reforming the tax code and entitlements. bill:

john boehner still has one to bestow. the man who currently holds the house ethics committee chair is bonner. he said he doesn't want the job this time. but again, how is it going to be a woman? there are no republican women on that committee. so who knows. there have been no republican women on that committee in years. this one might even be more awkward than the last one that john boehner had to go through gyrations to fix. good luck on that, mr. speaker. honestly, the problem that republicans have in trying to appear diverse in their leadership is that they just don't have a deep pool of republican-elected women to choose from. there aren't that many. here's what just happened to make that worse. republicans already had like no women in congress. before this last election out of 241 members of congress, only 24 republicans were women. 24 republicans heading into the last election. after this election, they went down. they went from 24 down to 20. a net loss of four. today that net loss of four became a net loss of five

democrats complain the new proposal from house speaker john boehner is too vague about tax increases even as it lays out a tough package of spending cuts. for instance raising medicare's eligibility age for the first time in the program's history most likely by two years from 65 to 67 the move would not apply to americans who are close to retirement now. it would be phased in for younger workers such as maggie, a virginia health club manager who just turned 50 last month. >> i think the biggest factor for me is when are you going to retire so you lose your insurance from work and if it goes to 67 you have this two- year gap. what are you going to do? >> reporter: when medicare was created in 1966, the average life expectancy for men was 67 years, today it's 76 and women live on average to 81. one recent study by the kaiser family foundation estimated that shifting medicare eligibility from 65 to 67 would save the federal government $5.7 billion a year. 65 and 66-year-olds would pay an extra $3.7 billion a year to ensure themselves. the employers would pay billions more. >> it would f

that's the question john boehner, the speaker of the house has. listen to him. >> this week we made a good faith offer to avert the fiscal crisis and that offer included significant spending cuts and reforms and it included additional revenue. frankly, it was the balanced approach that the president has been asking for. now we need a response from the white house. we can't sit here and negotiate with ourselves. and if the president doesn't agree with our proposal and our outline, i think he's got an obligation to send one to the congress. a plan that can pass both chambers of congress. if you look at the plans that the white house has talked about thus far, they couldn't pass either house of the congress. >> brian: hasn't because it's been presented before. here is one thing the president i think is banking on because he's playing his cards and it's a strategic approach. he's saying if i can divide boehner and the other house republicans, i could break this thing wide open and i could get what i need. and it turns out of all places, the "new york
